The Link and Zelda who star in The Fable of Zelda: Breath of the Wild already wait quite dissimilar previous iterations of the classic characters. In a new making-of documentary about the game, the design squad showed that we could have seen the characters with some even wilder styles.

The second part of the half-60 minutes The Making of The Fable of Zelda : Breath of the Wild goes in-depth on the game'south story and characters, with plenty of concept fine art to go effectually. Art director Satoru Takizawa broke down the procedure for how interconnected story and character designs are when it comes to producing a Zelda game.

"There's the bones plan, the story, the different scenes, all the characters that are required to brand everything work," he explained. "The designers start their creative process from at that place."

Somehow, with Breath of the Wild, this led to Takizawa and his team to come up with some truly ... inspired styles for Link and Zelda, Link in particular.

The inspiration behind this spacefaring version of Link should be obvious to whatever Nintendo fan, even if its connectedness to Jiff of the Wild'due south plot is totally inscrutable:

We first saw some of these wild Link designs during a Game Developers Conference talk before this calendar month. They were among the nigh surprising pieces from the variety of scrapped artwork shown onstage — but the documentary shows that, somehow, the blueprint squad transitioned from them to a more familiar expect.

Eventually, Takizawa and visitor got closer to the Link we all know and love. Discover, however, that his iconic cap is long gone.

It doesn't return for Link'southward final character pattern, either, although players have establish a style to approximate Link's classic green tunic await.

This isn't quite the final grapheme design for Link, but it's much, much closer.

Zelda has an even more than dramatic wardrobe alter from her classic pinkish dress getup. In Breath of the Wild, the princess of Hyrule gets to clothing pants, a pregnant twist on her usual way.

When the character artists had their turn at designing Breath of the Wild'southward Zelda, they went in a different direction entirely.

"For them, information technology was all nigh first impressions," the director said. "Well-nigh how Zelda'southward design could brand you experience something deep inside."

Although there was at least dress in the mix, their artwork mostly shows a Princess Zelda who's ready to enter combat and fight on her ain behalf.
